Securing your site is not much different than securing your home. If you leave your door unlocked, anyone can walk in and steal or destroy your belongings.
You think it will never happen to you. Why would it? You’re a good person. You live in a nice neighborhood. You and your kids interact with the neighbors and they seem like lovely people.
But for some, all it requires is opportunity. Your door is unlocked, you’re off talking to the neighbor and boom!
And just because it hasn’t happened in the last five years you’ve owned your home doesn’t mean it won’t happen today.
What if today is the day your site gets hacked? Do you have a backup?
Your WordPress database contains every post, every comment and every link you have on your blog or website. If your database gets erased or corrupted, you stand to lose EVERYTHING you have written.
How devastating would it be to lose everything? Is your website your livelihood? Even if it’s a hobby, a place to write stories, share recipes or crafts, it can still be devastating.
It may not be a hacker that causes you to lose your data either. It could be human error or a server going down. Who knows? Why risk not having a backup?
If you have a backup, you can at least recover most of what was on your website, right? If you don’t have a backup, there’s no way to retrieve any of it. I say most because you can only recover what you’ve backed up, not things that were added since the backup. The more often you add content, the more often you should back up your site.
